What Your Date's Social Web Use Says About Them

The 21st century has given us some new metrics to measure prospective partners in online dating. For instance, social websites and services. Once you realize that each of these services has its own unique culture, it becomes immediately apparent that different niches would attract different people over time. To wit:

  • Yahoo! Groups - Very old school. Expect someone either senior-citizen age, or tragically out of touch with the modern web.

  • Digg or Reddit - The hive of drones. This is a mixed bag, as these are the two most-frequented social sites, but expect someone age 18-25, very well-informed about the web, very insulated against the rest of the world.

  • Facebook - Again, everybody and their dog (literally) is on Facebook now, so expect people of all ages and persuasions. But also count on somebody with "nothing to hide", who is very connected to their family and/or co-workers.

  • Twitter - Chatterbox! At least you know they're a great communicator who's always available. Look out for egos.

  • MySpace - Look for teenagers and younger. Anybody on MySpace over the age of 21 might have serious developmental issues, unless they're entertainers (singers, artists, etc.) keeping touch with their fans.

  • 4chan - Either you're dealing with lowlifes, or the rare intellectual who finds the brainless silliness amusing. Don't bet on the latter.

  • Adult FriendFinder - Sexually liberated. However, also look out for people cruising for quick casual sex.

  1. What about Phone dating chatlines - You've seen the late night commercials. Wild singles who like talking over the phone with local singles. Most people are looking to hook up.

  2. Hi Jodie

I've had some experience with match (in the US). At first I couldn't get a single friggin date but then I browsed for cool profiles and copied a guy who had one. Still no luck.

Then I finally took professional photos with a local photographer and got my cool pictures retouched by my photo genie . This is what changed every thing for me. After that I met some cute chicks but of course most of them didn't go any where. Guess I need to improve my game.

If slinky.com.au ever comes to US, let me know. You can just leave a comment in my blog and I'll check it out. Hope it's filled with quality people :)

  6. There are many social networking sites on internet and the number is growing. The main reason of their popularity is that people can interact with each other easily and can share their experiences and common interests one of among these is facebook which gives many tools and applications to its members for better interaction.

  8. Excellent post on what kind of people to expect when using the most popular social media.

As a dating coach for men, I´d like to give my 2 cents here about something that´s related to the topic: new dating sites and social media.

With `old` dating sites and social media that hav ebeen around for a couple years, you can expect to find a lot of women on there that have been approached by men online a lot.

That makes it harder for you to get their attention, get a response from them, and finally date them.

That´s why I tell all my fans and customers that want to have online dating success to keep track of new sites and social media.

    Why?

Because the women that join the new sites and media haven´t been approached by men at all or only a couple of times.

So, they´re more open to talking to men online, more interested in meeting new people, more social and so on because they haven´t been ´stalked´ by dozens of men a day that want to date them.

Most women on old sites and social media have been receiving dozens of messages a day from men, which is why I recommend you try new sites and media.

On those sites and media it´s still new, open, social, fun, and easy to get someone´s attention.

So look for the new ones!

  9. Hi Jodie:

I was surfing the net and stumbled upon your blog. Nice layout by the way! As for social networks, I will have to agree with you on your points. I didn't even realize Yahoo Groups where still around, given all of the more relevant competition like Facebook.

You're right on target with your assessment of what the social networks have to say about a person. It seems Facebook (at#2 ranking) leads the pact, but I really don't think it's a place to pick up on singles.

In any event, really found the blog article to be useful. Thanks for the post.
